Switzerland: turning the luxury alpine hotel into a four-season destination

· 5 min read

Swiss hotels recorded almost 44 million overnight stays in 2025, their third consecutive record. Both winter and summer seasons reached new highs, confirming that mountain demand now extends beyond skiing.

For a luxury hotel, opening longer is profitable only when product, teams and costs are redesigned. Replicating the winter offer in summer rarely generates sufficient demand.

Create a specific reason to visit outside winter

Wellness, gastronomy, art, guided hiking, cycling or work retreats should form a clear proposition. The hotel sells a rhythm and privileged access to the region, not a list of activities. Local partners become an extension of the experience.

Adapt the cost model to dispersed demand

Shoulder seasons require versatile teams, flexible spaces and selective outlet opening. Management should track margin by segment and period. Filling an entirely open hotel at low rates may cost more than closing part of the capacity.

Retain Swiss and regional clients

Residents provide demand that is less dependent on flights and global calendars. Dining, spa, private events and short stays can build a year-round relationship. This local base protects the property when long-haul markets slow.
